Tim Cook Shares ‘Shot on iPhone’ Photos of Nature to Celebrate Earth Day 2019

Monday, April 22, is Earth Day and, as is par for the course, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook, is celebrating.

This year, Cook is using the “Shot on iPhone” marketing campaign to help the cause. Over on his official Twitter account he shared four different photos of nature, all shot on the iPhone. In the first image, which is at the top of this article, we can see a pair of penguins hanging out, enjoying the (cold) weather. In one photo we can see a tiny frog relaxing on a plant.

The third shot is a close-up of a lizard’s head, showing off the beautiful colors. And, finally, a lone giraffe keeping an equally single tree on the plain as rain falls in the background. Each of the photos are pretty great, and you can see them all in Cook’s original tweet:

Apple has had a bit of a focus on nature. In its latest “Shot on iPhone XS” videos, Apple showed off the power of Mother Nature. And, before that, caught the preservation efforts of a program trying to keep Whale Sharks in the Maldives around.Sponsor ads:

8 of the best free wallpaper apps for Android 2019

Wallpapers (Google)

Wallpapers by Google isn't the company's best-known app, but it's a solid choice for anyone that wants to have a whole range of different wallpaper options available to them. You can choose between your photos, on-device wallpapers, live wallpapers, or choose a specific category, like 'Cityscapes' or 'Textures'.

Opinion by Ben Woods

I like to see something different in the background of my phone and change the wallpaper often.

What do you think?

Once you've selected your category, you can then either choose a specific image, or select the option to automatically change the wallpaper each day with a new image from that category. Another of the advantages of Google's Wallpaper app is that the repository of images is continually updated.

Perhaps the one potential downside, if you're looking for a specific image or item, is that there's no search functionality within the app. Nonetheless, it's a solid choice to consider and it's all free. If you have multiple wallpaper apps installed, you can view and launch them via the Wallpapers app too.

Wallpapers
7Fon

7Fon is the first option in this list that provides the option of signing into an app, but it's not entirely necessary just to use it. It's also one of the best wallpaper apps for filtering through a huge selection of different options. As well as breaking all the images down by category, you can also tap on the information button on any individual image to bring up a color palette from that shot.

You can also tap the palette icon in the top-right of the main app screen. Tapping on any of those colors then returns other images with similar colors; this might not sound very useful, but if you want a specific color, rather than a specific image, that's not always too easy to achieve via other wallpaper apps.

7Fon also has some robust auto-image changing options, which allow you to control options like how often the image changes, whether to download on Wi-Fi or data. where to store the images and a few other useful controls. If you choose to create an account, you can favorite and rate images, which is then shown within the app to give an idea of the popularity of each image. Registered users can also submit images.

Wallpapers HD & 4K Backgrounds
Backgrounds HD Wallpapers

Backgrounds HD is another on this list that lets users submit images of their own (provided you sign into the app) but it has fewer features than 7Fon above, which may appeal to some people. As well as breaking everything down into different categories and providing a search option, images are also organized into Featured, Recent and Popular shots. Popular lets you search by daily, weekly, monthly or all-time.

You don't need to register to download or favorite images, but you will need to if you want to leave comments on other people's uploads, follow people within the app or if you want to upload your own backgrounds. As with Wallpapers HD, the app also lets you set an image for multiple destinations, such as the lock screen, home screen or profile images on your phone.

Backgrounds HD lets you follow other users and upload your own images. / © AndroidPIT

Backgrounds HD (Wallpapers)
Backdrops

If you're happy to spend a little money on your wallpaper habit, Backdrops is well worth a look, and gets a shoutout for its considered UI and image categorization, but there are also plenty of free wallpapers available.

As well as the now-familiar list of categories you'd expect in a wallpaper app, Backdrops provides an 'Explore' panel, which is a neat way to bring together both free and premium images. There's also a community tab for images uploaded by other users, and the app provides the ability to rate and favorite images you want to return to later.

Backdrops is another that lets you set an image to your lock screen, as well as your home screen in one tap too. To do that, long-press the 'Set' button for an individual image and additional options will pop up at the bottom of the screen. The app arranges premium content into different collections too, which you can pay to unlock individually, or you can just spring to unlock the whole Premium app, which also removes the ads, for around $2.

Backdrops has a relatively small selection, but the images are great. / © AndroidPIT

Backdrops - Wallpapers
Muzei

Muzei takes a slightly different approach to wallpapers, and how you navigate the different options, to other apps in this list by making your own on-device images the priority. If you don't have any/many shots on your phone, you can select to use one of the featured pieces each day.

If you do select to use images in your 'My Pictures' folder, you can also dive into the settings to set how often the images should change. Unlike every other app in this list, Muzei doesn't leave your selected image unaltered, which is smart. One of the potential downsides of using a real photo as a background is that it can make text hard to read and icons difficult to make out.

To fix this, Muzei applies a blur to each image. Double tapping an empty space on your home screen will switch between the blurred and original image for a few seconds. If you want to dive into the settings to control the amount of blur, dimming or switch the image to grayscale, you can do that via the main app menu. Muzei is probably the first app you'll want to install in this list, as it can be used with some of the others.

Muzei is a standalone app, as well as working in conjunction with others in this list. / © AndroidPIT

Muzei Live Wallpaper
Walli - HD Wallpapers & Backgrounds

The unique thing about Walli is that the wallpapers are created by a community of artists that can earn money for their creations. That means each wallpaper is hand-picked and all of them have an artistic and creative vibe, instead of the generic stock image style you can get from using other wallpaper apps.

There's an Instagram-like feed for you to scroll through, and categories that actually help you find what you're looking for. Whether it's beaches, animals or your favorite fandom (Breaking Bad, anyone?), there's something for everyone in this app.

If you want a wallpaper that stands out from the crowd and is as individual as you are, Walli is the app to use.

Walli offers a very artistic selection of wallpapers organized into helpful categories. / © AndroidPIT

AMOLED Wallpapers

Smartphones with AMOLED displays are unique, because they give you the opportunity to save a bit of extra battery life. There's no backlighting on any black pixels on AMOLED screens, so there's not only energy savings, but also infinite contrast. If your phone doesn't have an AMOLED display, you can still use these wallpapers, but you won't get better battery life by using them, sadly.

AMOLED wallpapers, whether for your home screen or lock screen, look exceptionally cool and there's a lot of them out there to choose from. Unfortunately, that means there's a lot of lame apps in the Play Store that are full of ads ready to waste your time. We've found one (aptly named AMOLED Wallpapers) that isn't bogged down with ads and has a wide, well-organized selection.

Upon opening the app, you'll encounter a somewhat random assortment of the latest additions. But, if you go to the categories tab, you'll see the usual suspects: abstract shapes, space themes, animals and many more, all with a deep black background.

Find the coolest AMOLED wallpapers without any hassle. / © AndroidPIT

AMOLED Wallpapers
Tapet

Tapet is a relatively new wallpaper app that claims to be the first of its kind. You can either select a random wallpaper or let the app generate one for you hourly or daily. What's cool about Tapet is that wallpapers created according to your device's screen resolution, meaning that you will always get great results, regardless of what phone you have. This is not your typical app where you download wallpapers as image files, either. No images are downloaded from the internet at all, as everything is generated directly on your device.

No downloads, and an unlimited amount of wallpapers. / © Tapet

Because the wallpapers are generated and not downloaded, it means that there is literally an endless number of options. If you are the kind of smartphone user that changes their wallpaper often, this is the wallpaper app for you for sure. There's also support for Muzei, another wallpaperer app on our list.

YouTube TV Increases Price to $49.99/Month, $54.99/Month When Billed Through Apple

YouTube TV today announced a price hike for all users, first hitting new subscribers immediately and then arriving for existing subscribers beginning with billing cycles after May 13. The price hike will be a $10 increase on the monthly cost of the live TV streaming service, boosting the price of the platform to $49.99/month.

The cost of YouTube TV will be even more if you subscribe to the service through one of Apple's devices, as those members will be billed at $54.99/month due to the 30 percent cut that Apple takes during the first year of an annual subscription. Apple's policy has resulted in divergent prices for numerous apps and services on the App Store, leading to legal battles with companies like Spotify.

For YouTube TV, the company says that the price increase is so that it can keep bringing its customers "the best possible service," today including the addition of Discovery network branded channels. Eight total channels are being added to YouTube TV as of this week: Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend. EPIX is also available for an additional charge.

That means YouTube TV has now grown to over 70 channels. The base price of the service also includes 6 accounts per household, a cloud DVR with no storage space limits, 3 concurrent streams, and local affiliate coverage in over 90 percent of the markets where YouTube TV is available (which is now all U.S. markets).

With today's news of a price hike, YouTube TV is now the third major over-the-top streaming service to announce a price hike in the past month. DirecTV Now started the trend in early March with a $10/month price hike, then FuboTV followed later in the month with a $10/month price hike, and now YouTube TV customers are facing their own $10/month subscription increase.

With the changes, Hulu With Live TV and PlayStation Vue are now the cheapest options among the major platforms, and YouTube TV sits in the middle in terms of cost for entry-level subscriptions.

SlingTV - $25/month for "Orange and Blue" with limited-time discount

Hulu With Live TV - $44.99/month

PS Vue - $44.99/month for "Access" tier

YouTube TV - $49.99/month

DirecTV Now - $50/month for "Plus" and "Live a Little"

FuboTV - $54.99/month for "Standard"

This is the third price hike in YouTube TV's history. The service originally cost $35/month and then increased its price to $40/month in the spring of 2018.Sponsor ads:

How to customize the interface

One of the advantages of EMUI is undoubtedly its level of customization. Set up your own photo as a background, put apps in the dedicated drawer, navigate using the physical or virtual keys, rearrange the apps on the screens - all it takes is a few steps to make the interface fit your tastes and needs.

Change the background: Settings>Display>Wallpaper>Set wallpaper>Gallery/Other.

Activate the app drawer: Settings>Display>Home screen style>Drawer.

Choose how to navigate the system: Settings>Smart assistant>System navigation; here you can tell your device to activate the single Navigation Key to access the home screen, the lock screen and recent activities, whether to activate the Virtual Navigation Bar (by customizing the key combination) or opt for the Quick Menu.

Modify Quick settings: lower the drop down menu and tap on the pencil icon.

Adapt your smartphone to your needs. / © AndroidPIT by Irina Efremova

Change layouts and rearrange apps: press and hold on the home screen and click on Settings. In this section you can reorganize your apps, even by shaking your smartphone to realign them.

Display the percentage of battery left: Settings>Apps and notifications>Notifications and status bar>Battery percentage: Do not show/Next to battery icon/Inside battery icon.

Add contact info on the lock screen: Settings>Security and privacy>Screen lock & passwords>Lock screen signature.

Deactivate the pedometer on the lock screen: Settings>Security and privacy>Screen lock & passwords>Show step count on lock screen.

Customize wallpapers, widgets and transitions. / © AndroidPIT
Immerse yourself in the display menu

We often underestimate the importance of the display and the settings associated with it. I am not only talking about the level of brightness but also about the option of modifying the color rendering of the displayed content, as well as customizing the font size.

Font size: Settings>Display>Text size.

Change the size of interface elements: Settings>Display>View mode.

Display resolution: Settings>Display>Screen Resolution.

Display brightness: Settings>Display>Brightness.

Color temperature: Settings>Display>Color temperature>Default/Warm/Cold.

Color mode: Settings>Display>Color mode>Normal/Vivid.

Filter the blue light on the screen: Settings>Display>Eye comfort.

Adjust the text size according to your preferences. / © AndroidPIT

Turn off the screen: Settings>Display>Sleep>30 seconds is a good way to limit consumption.

View an app in full screen mode: Settings>Display>Full-screen display.

Screen rotation: Settings>Display>Auto-rotate screen/Smart rotate.

Increase the sensitivity of the touchscreen during winter: Settings>Smart assistance>Gloves mode.

Display photos on the lock screen while charging: Settings/Display/Screen saver.
Speed up interactions with your device

Not all the options offered by a device are useful. On EMUI there are some functions that I recommend you activate, because they will allow you to optimize the interaction with your smartphone by making you navigate with fewer gestures or steps.

Find files in no time: swipe down from the home screen and you will see the search bar appear.

Activate voice commands: Settings>Smart Assistance>Voice control to answer or reject calls with your voice.

Call a contact from the off screen: press and hold the volume key and say the name of the contact after the beep.

Wake up Google Assistant: hold down the home button and use the voice command (remember to activate it first from the Google app).

Open apps by drawing the initial on the display: Settings>Smart assistance>Motion Control>Draw.

Divide the screen in two with your knuckle: Settings>Smart assistance>Motion control>Split-screen gesture.

Activate the quick launcher: from the unlock screen, swipe up and down to access the recorder, flashlight, calculator, timer and camera.

A swipe is all it takes to access the quick launcher. / © AndroidPIT

Use two WhatsApp/Facebook accounts: Settings>Apps and Notifications>App twin.

Activate the unlock with face recognition: Settings>Security and privacy>Face unlock.

Activate one-handed operation:Settings>Smart Assistance>One-handed UI>Mini screen view.

Take a screenshot: instead of the classic combination of Low Volume + Power button, knock a few times on the screen with your knuckle.
Security

Locking your device with a PIN, password, sequence, fingerprint reader or face recognition will help you protect your data. And if you want to keep secrets from curious eyes, you'll be happy to find features that are designed for you!

Set one or more fingerprints: Settings>Security and privacy>Fingerprint ID.

Create a private space on your smartphone by activating private space: Settings>Security and Privacy>PrivateSpace.

Encrypt photos, audio, video, and other files: Settings>Security and privacy>File safe>Enable.

Block access to some apps: Settings>Security and Privacy>App Lock.

Locate the device in case of loss or theft: Settings>Security and Privacy>Find my device>On.

Install apps from unknown soures: Settings>Security and Privacy>Other>Install unknown apps.

Set/Disable SIM PIN: Settings>Security and Privacy>Other>Set SIM lock.

Become a master with the camera

This is one of the components people use the most and it is full of surprises, especially now that artificial intelligence is taking over smartphones. Introduced on the Mate 10 Pro and View 10 with the Kirin 970 NPU, AI helps to optimize the photographic experience when you choose the best settings and modes, depending on your needs.

Activate Pro mode: open the camera app. Swipe from left to right and click on Pro photoor Pro video.

Take a picture from the off screen: double-click on the Lower Volume.

Browse through photos in the gallery quickly: open a photo in the Gallery, pinch to zoom out and scroll through other shots.

Select multiple photos at once: open folder, press and hold on the photo you want to select for a few seconds and swipe your finger to select the others.

Create a bokeh effect: open the camera and click on the icon simulating the lens aperture; now click on the object you want to focus on and shoot.

Adjust the beauty effect: click on the portrait icon and slide your finger on the beauty level indicator.

Fun with AR: activate AR lenses from the camera menu, tap on AR at the bottom and select the effects you want to see in real time on the object you are shooting.

AI mode will help you take better photos. / © AndroidPIT

Artist mode: to transform your photos into comics or make them works of art (in Prism style).

Apply Instagram-style filters before shooting: activate the Filter item between camera modes and then click the three circles to display the nine filters in real time.

Take a picture with a smile: access the camera settings with a side swipe and activate Capture smiles.

Scan a document: open the camera and click Document Scan; frame the document and proceed with scanning as instructed.

Activate/deactivate AI: depending on the device, you can do this by accessing the camera app and clicking on Settings>AI Master or select the AI button from the screen that you will see when the camera is launched.

Apply the grid: launch the camera app, Settings>Camera Grid>Grid.

Set the timer to click: launch the camera app, Settings>Timer and select between 2/5 or 10 seconds.
Battery

Unfortunately, this doesn’t perform miracles. You won’t be able to make the battery of your smartphone last longer than two days. You can, however, monitor and manage battery consumption with dedicated settings, and if it’s supported, you can take advantage of quick charging to get all the energy you need back in a short time.

Enable power save mode: To limit apps in the background, disable automatic synchronization of email and system sound.

Choose ultra energy saving mode: for emergency situations, this mode allows the use of very few apps, greatly limiting the user experience.

Understand what weighs on power consumption: Settings>Battery>Battery Usage.

Optimize consumption: Settings>Battery>Optimize, then click on the tips you want to put into practice.

Display percentage of remaining charge: Settings>Battery>Battery percentage and select the icon.

Set dark interface to save battery: Settings>Battery>Darken interface colors.

Use reverse wireless charging: Settings>Battery>Reverse Wireless Charging.

Have a look at the use of the battery. / © X-Kom.pl
Other useful tips

If you want to have to complete control of the system, here are some additional tricks:

Activate the developer options: Settings>About phone>Build number, click on this until you see the notification of successful activation.

Reset your smartphone: Settings>Reset>Factory data reset.

Update your system: Settings>System Update>Updater or take advantage of this trick.

Manage two SIM cards at the same time: Settings>Wireless and networks>Dual SIM settings.

Schedule your smartphone to turn on to sound the alarm: Settings>Smart assistance>Schedule power on/off; set the time that it will turn on and then the time for the alarm.

Transfer data from your old smartphone: Download Phone Clone on the two devices (Huawei, Honor or Apple) and select the data you want to transfer.

Better audio experience: Settings>Sound>Huawei Histen audio effects (connect the earphones to the device or the item will not appear in the menu).Sponsor ads:

Toddler Locks His Dad out of iPad for 47 Years

iPad disabled for 47 years

It is pretty common for parents nowadays to give their kids an iPad to help distract them and make them keep quiet. Evan Osnos, a journalist from Washington DC, did the same and ended up being locked out of his iPad for 47 years.

Osnos’s 3-year-old kid repeatedly kept entering the wrong passcode on the iPad which eventually led to it being disabled and locked for 47 years or 25 million+ minutes. This happens if one repeatedly enters the wrong passcode. Waiting for the passcode timer to reset is definitely not an option here because by the time that happens, Osnos’ kid will end up having kids of his own.
View image on Twitter
Uh, this looks fake but, alas, it’s our iPad today after 3-year-old tried (repeatedly) to unlock. Ideas?

Thankfully, there is an easy solution to this problem if you ever find yourself stuck in the same situation. Apple even has a dedicated support page about this. All you need to do is connect your iPad to iTunes on your PC and then proceed to restore it to the latest version of iOS. There’s a catch here though, the iPad/iPhone will be completely erased and so will all your data. But I guess for someone in Osnos’ situation, this is still a better situation than waiting for 47 years to activate his iPad again.

Moral of the story? Don’t give a locked iPad to your kid. They will end up locking you out of it as well.

We Want to Hear From You

Have you ever been locked out from your iPhone or iPad for a ridiculous amount of time? If so, what did you do? And how did you get into such a situation in the first place? Drop a comment and let us know!

Verizon's 5G Network Launches Starting in Chicago and Minneapolis

Verizon today announced it has turned on its commercial 5G network, starting in select areas of Minneapolis and Chicago. Verizon had originally targeted an April 11 launch, so the rollout is a week ahead of schedule.

Verizon customers can access the 5G network with the Moto Z3 smartphone paired with the 5G-enabled Moto Mod accessory, providing the "world's first commercial 5G mobile service with a 5G-enabled smartphone." The carrier plans to expand the network to more than 30 cities across the U.S. by the end of 2019.

Verizon says customers in Chicago and Minneapolis should expect typical download speeds of 450 Mbps, with peak speeds of nearly 1 Gbps and latency less than 30 milliseconds. Of course, speeds should improve with future upgrades.

In Chicago, 5G coverage is concentrated in areas of the West Loop and the South Loop, around landmarks like Union Station, Willis Tower, The Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, and The Chicago Theatre, according to Verizon. 5G service is also available at select Verizon stores in the city.

In Minneapolis, service is concentrated in the downtown area, as well as inside and around U.S. Bank Stadium. 5G service is also available around landmarks like the Minneapolis Convention Center, the Minneapolis Central Library, the Mill City Museum, Target Center, The Commons, and areas of Elliot Park.

The Moto Z3 retails for $240, or 24 monthly payments of $10, while the 5G Moto Mod is available for $199.99 for a limited time. Verizon postpaid customers with any unlimited plan, including Go Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, or Above Unlimited, can get unlimited 5G data for an additional $10 per month.

As for the first 5G-enabled iPhone, UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri recently said there is "increasing potential that Apple may not be able to ship a 5G iPhone for 2020" due to the company's legal battle with chipmaker Qualcomm and the growing possibility that Intel may not have a 5G modem ready to ship by next year.Sponsor ads:
